Authority: How You're Designed to Make Decisions

Authority: How You're Designed to Make Decisions

Picture this: you're staring at two doors, and both of them look good. One is the safe, sensible choice — the one your friends, your family, and your spreadsheet all quietly approve of. The other is the one that makes your chest feel a little tight, the one you keep circling back to when no one's watching. You've asked everyone you trust for their opinion. You've made a pros-and-cons list so long it's practically a novel. And still, at the end of the day, you have no idea which door is yours. Sound familiar? Here's the thing most of us were never told: the answer was never going to come from the list, or from your friends, or from anyone else. It was always going to come from you — from a quiet, specific part of your own design that you were never taught how to listen to. In Human Design, we call that your Authority. It's the inner compass you're built to use when a decision matters, and once you learn to trust it, choosing stops feeling like a gamble and starts feeling like coming home.

What is Authority in Human Design?

In Human Design, your Authority is the part of you that is designed to make decisions — the specific inner signal that tells you yes or no when the moment of choice arrives. It's not the same as your mind, and that's the whole point. Your mind is brilliant at gathering information, weighing options, and imagining outcomes, but it's not designed to be the final decision-maker. It's designed to be your observer, your narrator, your strategist — not your compass. Your Authority, on the other hand, is a felt, embodied signal that comes from a defined Center in your chart. When you learn to recognize it, you stop outsourcing your most important choices to anxiety, to other people's opinions, or to the loudest voice in the room. You start making decisions from a place of genuine alignment.

If you haven't looked at your chart yet, this is the perfect moment to generate your free chart (/chart) — your Authority is right there waiting for you, and it's one of the most practical pieces of your whole design. It's the difference between knowing who you are in theory and actually living it in the small, daily moments that make up a life.

Authority and Strategy: two halves of one whole

Before we dive into the different Authorities, it helps to see how Authority fits into the bigger picture. In Human Design, your Strategy is the 'how' of your movement — the way you're designed to initiate, respond, or wait as you move through the world. Your Authority is the 'how' of your decisions — the inner signal you use when a choice needs to be made. They work together, and they're meant to be used together. Your Strategy tells you when and how to act; your Authority tells you which action is truly yours.

Think of it this way: Strategy is the door, and Authority is the key. A Generator's Strategy is to respond, but responding to what? That's where Authority comes in — it's the felt sense of excitement or ease that tells a Generator which invitation is worth their energy. A Projector's Strategy is to wait for the invitation, but Authority is what helps them recognize which invitation is genuinely for them. If you're new to these ideas, our guide to your Type and Strategy (/blog/your-type-and-strategy) is a wonderful place to start, because it gives you the foundation that makes Authority make sense.

Emotional (Solar Plexus) Authority

Emotional Authority is the most common Authority in the world, and it belongs to people with a defined Solar Plexus Center. If this is you, your decisions are meant to be made over time — not in the heat of the moment. Your emotional wave rises and falls, and the truth of a decision only becomes clear once you've ridden that wave to its natural end. The key word here is time. When you feel a surge of excitement about something, that's real — but it's not the whole story. When you feel a dip of doubt, that's real too — but it's also not the whole story. The clarity comes when you wait, let the wave move through you, and check in again.

The practical practice for Emotional Authority is simple and powerful: never decide in the moment. Give yourself a full cycle of feeling — a day, a week, whatever the situation allows — and notice how the same choice looks different at the top of the wave and the bottom. The decision that feels right at both ends of the wave, when you're calm and clear, is the one that's truly yours. This is one of the most transformative practices in all of Human Design, because it teaches you to trust the whole of your feeling, not just the loudest part of it.

Sacral Authority

Sacral Authority belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators who have a defined Sacral Center. Your decision-making signal is a gut-level, in-the-moment response — a sound, a sensation, a surge of energy that says yes or no before your mind can get involved. It's the 'uh-huh' and the 'nuh-uh' that rise up from your body when something is put in front of you. It's immediate, it's physical, and it's remarkably reliable.

The practice for Sacral Authority is to ask yes-or-no questions and listen to the body's response, rather than asking open-ended questions that send you into your head. 'Do I want to go?' — feel the answer. 'Is this a good fit?' — feel the answer. The mind will want to argue, to rationalize, to second-guess, but the Sacral response is honest in a way the mind rarely is. Over time, learning to trust that gut signal becomes one of the most freeing things you'll ever do — because it means you never have to force a decision again. You just have to listen.

Splenic Authority

Splenic Authority belongs to people with a defined Spleen Center and no defined Sacral or Solar Plexus. Your decision-making signal is the intuition of the body — a sudden, quiet knowing that arrives in the present moment and doesn't repeat itself. It's the flash of instinct that tells you to take a different route home, the subtle unease that warns you away from a person or a place, the spontaneous 'yes' that feels right without any explanation. The Spleen is the body's survival center, and its voice is immediate, precise, and one-time-only.

The practice for Splenic Authority is to trust the first signal and not overthink it. The Spleen speaks once, in the moment, and then it's gone — if you try to revisit it later, you'll find only your mind's reconstruction of it. This can feel challenging at first, especially if you're used to deliberating, but it's also a profound gift: your body already knows what's safe and what's right for you. The more you honor that first instinct, the more reliable it becomes. For a deeper look at how your body's signals work alongside your overall design, our Human Design 101 page (/human-design-101) walks through the Centers and how they speak to you.

Ego (Heart) Authority

Ego Authority, also called Heart Authority, belongs to people with a defined Heart (Ego) Center and no defined Sacral, Spleen, or Solar Plexus. Your decision-making signal is a clear, will-driven knowing — a sense of 'I want this, and I'm willing to commit to it.' It's not about what you should do or what's expected; it's about what you genuinely want to put your will behind. When your Ego Authority says yes, it comes with a quiet certainty and a readiness to follow through.

The practice for Ego Authority is to honor your will and your wants without apology. This is the Authority that says, 'I'm going to make this happen,' and then does. The challenge is that many of us have been taught to suppress our wants in favor of what's practical or pleasing to others. But your design is telling you something different: your wants are a legitimate, trustworthy source of guidance. When you make decisions from that place of genuine will, you find that you have the energy and follow-through to back them up.

Self-Projected Authority

Self-Projected Authority belongs to Projectors with a defined G Center and no defined Sacral, Spleen, Solar Plexus, or Heart Center. Your decision-making signal is your own voice — you find clarity by speaking your truth out loud, often to a trusted person, and hearing what you say. The answer doesn't arrive in your head; it arrives on your lips. When you talk through a decision, you hear yourself make sense of it in a way you couldn't by just thinking about it silently.

The practice for Self-Projected Authority is to give yourself the gift of being heard. Find someone who listens without steering you, and talk it out. Notice what you say, what you repeat, what you emphasize — that's your truth surfacing. This is why Projectors so often benefit from working with a guide or a coach who can hold space for them; our readings page (/readings) is designed exactly for that kind of supportive, clarifying conversation. When you hear your own voice land on the right answer, you'll know it — because it will sound like you.

Ego Projected Authority

Ego Projected Authority is a rarer Authority, belonging to Projectors with a defined Heart (Ego) Center and no defined G Center, Sacral, Spleen, or Solar Plexus. It combines the Projector's gift for seeing with the Ego's clarity of will. Your decision-making signal is a blend of speaking your truth and feeling your want — you need to talk it through, and you also need to honor the quiet 'I want this' that rises up as you do.

The practice for Ego Projected Authority is to give yourself both time to speak and permission to want. Talk the decision out loud, and pay attention to the will that surfaces in your own words. When your voice and your want align, you have your answer. It's a beautiful, grounded way of deciding — one that honors both your mind's clarity and your heart's conviction.

Lunar Authority

Lunar Authority belongs to Reflectors — the rarest Type, making up about 1% of the population. Reflectors have no defined Centers, which means their decision-making signal is the moon itself. Your Authority asks you to wait a full lunar cycle — roughly 28 days — before making a significant decision. During that time, you're designed to reflect the energy of the people and places around you, and the clarity comes from observing how the decision feels across a full cycle of environments and moods.

The practice for Lunar Authority is patience, and it's a profound one. Give yourself the full month. Notice how the choice looks when you're with different people, in different places, on different days. The decision that remains steady and right across the whole cycle — not just on a good day — is the one that's truly yours. If you're a Reflector, this practice is your superpower: it gives you a perspective no one else has, and it protects you from the pressure to decide before you're ready.

What about 'None' (no Authority)?

You may have heard that some people have 'no Authority,' and it's worth clearing up. In practice, every chart has a way of deciding — but for Reflectors, that way is Lunar Authority, as we just covered. The idea of 'no Authority' is sometimes used loosely to describe charts where the decision-making signal is less obvious at first glance, but the truth is that every design has a path to clarity. If your chart feels unclear, the answer is usually to slow down, give yourself more time, and pay attention to the environment you're in. If you'd like help reading your own chart, our reports page (/reports) offers a guided, personalized walkthrough of your design.

How to trust your Authority in practice

Knowing your Authority is one thing; trusting it is another. Trust is built the same way it's built in any relationship — through small, repeated experiences of being right. Start with low-stakes decisions. Use your Authority to choose what to eat, what to wear, whether to accept a social invitation. Notice what happens when you follow the signal, and what happens when you ignore it. Over time, you'll build a track record of your own, and that track record is what makes trust possible.

It also helps to remember that your Authority is not about being right in a way the world can measure. It's about being aligned with your own design. Sometimes the 'right' decision by your Authority won't look right to anyone else — and that's okay. The goal isn't to make choices that impress people; it's to make choices that feel like you. When you do, you'll notice something shift: less second-guessing, less exhaustion, more ease. That's the feeling of living in alignment, and it's available to you in every decision, big or small.

A gentle reminder as you begin

If this all feels like a lot, take a breath. You don't have to master your Authority overnight, and you don't have to get it perfect. Human Design is a practice, not a test. The point isn't to become a flawless decision-maker; it's to become more yourself, one choice at a time. Start by simply noticing your Authority when a decision comes up. Name it. Give it a little room. See what happens when you let it speak.

And if you haven't yet, the very best next step is to look at your own chart and see which Authority is yours. It's free, it takes two minutes, and it might just change the way you make every decision from here on out. Generate your free chart (/chart) and meet the part of you that already knows the way.
